The Legend of Mauao

Mauao means ‘'caught in the light of the day.’' Legend has it that Mauao was nameless and spurned by the beautiful mountain Puwhenua. He begged fairy-like forest creatures to drag him to the ocean where he could kill himself. But the fairies fled from the sun’s rays and Mauao was transfixed on the spot.
