do love a bit of Shakespeare and that quotation from Romeo and Juliet
is a great introduction to the town of Stratford in Taranaki, New
Zealand.
Named
after Stratford-upon-Avon in England, the famed home of the great
bard William Shakespeare, Stratford has its own unique claim to
the arts world.
Situated
in its town centre is New Zealand's only glockenspiel, an Elizabethan-looking
tower that has large figurines performing the balcony scene from
Romeo and Juliet.
The
show is put on four times a day - at 10am, 1pm, 3pm and 7pm - after
the hour chimes are finished and run for about five minutes.
While
it isn't the same as sitting in the audience at the Royal Shakespear
Theatre it is a bit of fun and you can watch the show while sipping
on a coffee.
Another
interesting thing about Stratford, Taranaki, is that 67 of its tyreets
have been named after Shakespearian characters. They include:
Juliet
St, Orlando St, Miranda St, Portia St, Antonio St, Rosalind St,
Falstaff St, Ariel St, Montague Grove, Capulet Place, Oberson St,
Tybalt St, Elsinore St, Hamlet St, Romeo St, Shakespear St, Hathaway
St and Verona Place.
All
up there are 67 in all.
