As
you follow the coastal road around to Cape Palliser there is a sight
on the horizon that is literally a beacon drawing you on. It is
the Cape
Palliser lighthouse and it sits high above the sea with wide
bands of red and white.
At
the end of the road there is an area for you to park your car and
then make your way up 250 steps to the base of the lighthouse.
The
climb is not too difficult for averagely fit people - although my
calves did feel slightly overstretched for a day afterwards.
However,
the effort was worthwhile as from the lighthouse you get spectacular
views up and down the Wairarapa coastline and - on a clear day -
can even get to see New Zealand's South Island in the distance.
And
don't forget to take some time out to stop and look at the nearby
seal colony.
