Point
Lonsdale is about 5 kilometres from Queenscliff
and is worth visiting for a couple of features.
The
most obvious is the elegant lighthouse that has been helping to
guide shipping into Port Phillip Bay since 1902.
It
stands above the headland in what is known as the lighthouse precinct
- a heritage listed area containing many building associated with
martime navigation and also the military.
The
defence structures date back to World War I and were added to during
World War II.
Below
the lighthouse is a pretty pier which is used to strolling, fishing
or watching ships coming in to Port Phillip Bay through The Rip.
The
Rip is the stretch of rough water around the narrow mouth of the
Bay where it meets Bass Strait. It is regarded as among the 10 worst
stretches of water in the world. Even
on a calm day you can see the waters broiling as they meet.
