If
you are near Point Lonsdale it
is worthwhile taking the time to wander along the pier
close to the lighthouse and
check out The Rip.
The
Rip is a dangerous piece of water lying across the mouth of Port
Phillip Bay.
It
is roughly triangular in shape and covers the area between Point
Lonsdale on the western headland, the Shortlands Bluff near Queenscliff
and Portsea on the eastern headland.
The
photo above was taken on a relatively calm day so you can see why
in bad weather The Rip has proven so hazardous to shipping heading
to and from Melbourne.
The
Rip is regarded as among the 10 worst stretches of water in the
world and forms because of the power of the water surging through
a narrow channel 3.5 km wide, which is further reduced by the reefs
projecting from the headlands.
The
varying depths of the ocean floor also play their part going from
100m deep to just 5m.
