Hawke's
Bay is one of New Zealand's finest grape-growing regions and so
it would be most impolite - not to say silly - for visitors to ignore
the local wineries.
You
can drive around and do your own personal tour but a more sensible
way is to take a minibus trip and have someone else drive so you
can partake of the delights on offer.
When
TikiTouring ventured into Hawke's Bay we picked Vince's World of
Wine as our winery guide and had a fabulous afternoon of excellent
wines and entertaining commentary.
Vince
runs an air-conditioned 10-seater minibus service and one of the
great things is that you get picked up at your door from anywhere
in the Napier area. It's a free service so you've got to be happy
with that.
The
half-day Vineyard Tours leave from Napier at 1pm and take in four
or five wineries before returning you at around 5pm.
The
wineries we visited were Matariki, Ngatarawa, Trinity Hill and the
Mission. They were all really pleasant places to taste vino and
learn about the different varieties on offer and, it has to be admitted,
the tastings went down very smoothly.
Vince
Picone is a knowledgeable wine buff and an excellent storyteller
and has been leading tours around Hawke's Bay for some 15 years.
The
cost of the half-day excursion is $55 per person and there is a
really good value platter you can pre-order for an additional $10.
It is well worth it.
